Sport & floodlighting

Lighting a handball hall.
Lux levels and light in front of goal.

Handball is fast and physical. Goalkeepers have to read shots from every angle, court players passes across the whole hall. That takes even light from the centre circle into the goal area – and luminaires that can withstand hard throws.

At a glance
  • To DIN EN 12193, indoor handball needs 200 lx (class III), 500 lx (class II) and 750 lx (class I)
  • The court measures 40 × 20 m and fills almost an entire triple sports hall
  • Luminaires must be ball-impact resistant to DIN 18032-3
  • At the Rehberghalle in Roßdorf, the lighting's energy demand fell by 49.9 %

At 40 × 20 m, the handball court is one of the largest indoors. In a triple sports hall measuring 45 × 27 m it reaches almost to the walls. The lighting must therefore be even right into the corners – especially in the goal areas, where the fastest action happens.

Light for goalkeepers

A goalkeeper faces the court and has to read close-range shots in a split second. Luminaires in the goalkeeper's field of view or dark zones in front of the goal make that harder. The lighting calculation therefore checks not only the average but also glare from the players' perspective.

Ball-impact resistance to DIN 18032-3

Handballs are thrown hard and often hit the ceiling. Luminaires in sports halls must therefore be ball-impact resistant. Proof is provided to DIN 18032-3 – for the luminaire itself or for a protective grille. Many halls have robust, tested fittings. Instead of replacing them, often only the lighting technology is converted to LED. That is how it was done at the Rehberghalle in Roßdorf : T5 LED modules in the existing fittings, integrated into the existing KNX control system, 49.9 % less lighting energy.

One hall, many users

School sport in the morning, youth training in the afternoon, league matches at the weekend: in a handball hall the requirements change several times a day. With dimmable LED luminaires and switching groups, the lighting is adapted to each use. In divisible halls, each third of the hall gets its own groups.

The same values apply to basketball and volleyball – more in our guides to the basketball hall and volleyball hall.

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does a handball hall need?

To DIN EN 12193: 200 lx for training and school sport (class III), 500 lx for mid-level games (class II) and 750 lx for high-level play such as the top national league (class I).

How big is a handball court?

40 × 20 m. In a triple sports hall measuring 45 × 27 m it reaches almost to the walls.

Can the old luminaires in a handball hall stay?

Often yes. If the fittings are tested for ball impact and intact, only the lighting technology is converted to LED – as at the Rehberghalle in Roßdorf.
