Lighting an indoor tennis hall.
Good light right into the corners.

Many indoor tennis halls still have fluorescent or metal halide lamps. They take a long time to reach full brightness, cause glare on high balls and use a lot of electricity. Converting to LED is usually easier than expected – often the existing ball-impact-resistant fittings can even stay.

At a glance
  • For indoor tennis, DIN EN 12193 typically specifies 300 lx for training, 500 lx for club competition and 750 lx for high-level competition
  • Glare from high balls is the most common problem with old hall lighting
  • Existing ball-impact-resistant fittings can often continue in use with LED technology
  • At Club Raffelberg in Mülheim an der Ruhr, the energy demand for lighting fell by 54 %

Besides the average value, what matters is good uniformity right into the run-off areas and a layout that does not dazzle on serves and high balls. For tournaments, the associations issue their own recommendations.

Glare: looking up

When serving and smashing, players look straight up towards the ceiling. Luminaires above the court with high luminance then cause severe glare. Luminaires along the long sides, low-glare optics and bright ceilings that calm the visual field are better.

Reusing existing fittings

Many indoor tennis halls have rugged, ball-impact-resistant luminaires. Instead of replacing them, often only new LED technology goes inside – the tested fitting stays. In the tennis hall at Club Raffelberg was converted in exactly this way: 54 % less lighting energy, less glare on high balls and payback after 34 months. At KTHC Rot-Weiss in Cologne electricity consumption in the hockey and tennis hall fell by 42 %.

Light by booking

Indoor tennis halls are rented out by the hour. If the lighting is linked to the booking system, it only comes on for booked courts. At Club Raffelberg, the LED lighting is integrated into the booking system's app control.

Converting an indoor tennis hall into a padel hall?

Many clubs are adding padel courts or converting entire halls. The lighting requirements are similar, with two differences: glass walls around the court and a minimum luminaire height of 6 m. More on this in the guide Lighting a padel hall.

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does an indoor tennis hall need?

To DIN EN 12193, typically 300 lx for training and recreation, 500 lx for club competitions and 750 lx for top-level competition.

Can I keep the old luminaires in the indoor tennis hall?

Often, yes. If the fittings are ball-impact-resistant and intact, only the lighting technology is converted to LED. That is how it was done at Club Raffelberg in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

How much does LED save in an indoor tennis hall?

In our projects, the energy required for lighting fell by 54 % at Club Raffelberg and by 42 % at KTHC Rot-Weiss in Cologne.

What can be done about glare in an indoor tennis hall?

Luminaires along the long sides instead of above the court, glare-controlled optics and light-coloured ceilings. The lighting calculation shows whether the layout is glare-free on serves.
