Sport & floodlighting

Multi-purpose and multifunctional halls.
One light for sport, events and everyday use.

School sport in the morning, club training in the afternoon, a concert or meeting in the evening: a multi-purpose hall needs the right light for everything. Add to that ball-impact-resistant luminaires and – as soon as an audience is present – the safety lighting requirements for places of assembly.

At a glance
  • Sport is governed by the DIN EN 12193 classes: typically 200, 500 or 750 lx
  • Luminaires in sports halls must be ball-impact-resistant
  • Scenes switch between training, match and event at the touch of a button
  • For events with an audience, the requirements for safety lighting also apply

Dimmable LED installations cover several classes: dimmed for training, full output for matches. More on values, glare and ball impact in the guide Sports hall lighting.

Scenes for every use

  • Training: reduced brightness, only the occupied parts of the hall.
  • Match: full illuminance on the playing area.
  • Event: Light in the spectator area, dimmed playing area, stage or podium highlighted.
  • Cleaning and construction: bright working light, for a limited time.

Zones and scenes are controlled via DALI or a lighting management system. Presence detectors automatically switch off unused areas such as equipment rooms and corridors. More on this in the guide Presence detectors and light control.

Ball impact resistance

Luminaires in halls used for ball sports must be ball-impact-resistant – verified for the complete luminaire including its mounting, for example by testing to DIN 18032-3. Existing ball-impact-resistant fittings can often continue to be used with LED modules, as in the Rehberghalle in Roßdorf with 49.9 % less lighting energy.

Safety lighting at events

If the hall is used for events with an audience, the regulations for places of assembly of the respective federal state apply, depending on its size. These usually include safety lighting for escape routes and exits. The luminaires of Series 19 have a battery in the housing and need no central battery – which simplifies retrofitting in existing buildings.
